A. Limited edition prints are reproductions of the artist's original work of art. Collectors value limited edition prints because they are published in a specific number, which cannot be exceeded under any circumstances.
Q. Why are Signed prints more expensive?
A. When comparing a numbered print to a signed and numbered print the signature is not the only added value. Michael Hunt's signed and numbered prints always feature unique attributes not found on his unsigned edition. These added features always include more advanced printing techniques to capture as close as possible the look of the original painting. Each and every print in a signed and numbered edition is personally inspected by Michael prior to his signing to assure that it meets his high standards. When a signed and numbered print features the added exclusivity of being autographed by a celebrity or famous sports figure, Michael or his personal assistant is present during the entire signing process. We can not speak for other companies but when Michael Hunt says that a print has been personally hand-signed by an individual you can rest assure that is a fact. Because of this, signed and numbered prints have the potential of increasing in value where poster editions typically do not.
Q. What is a serilith
A. A lithograph is a very high quality machine printed image made by using a finely detailed separation process. Each color used by the artist is reproduced as close as possible using a combination of inks. Michael Hunt's lithographs are some of the highest quality printed. It is not uncommon for his prints to pass through the press numerous times drying overnight between each series of colors. This process, while time consuming and expensive, achieves the intricate detail and color brilliance Michael demands in his work. Lithographs can be numbered and signed and are valued accordingly.
Q. What is a serilith
A. A serilith is a print produced using a combination of two printing techniques, lithography and serigraphy. With a serigraph a separate silk screen is created for each color found in the art. Each screen is placed over the paper, and then by squeegee, paint matched by the artist, is applied for each color in the art. These single applications of one paint color at a time require drying time before the next color paint can be applied. Due to the complexity of the process it can take months to produce a small edition. Due to the complexity in Michael Hunt's art traditional serigraphy techniques can not capture the fine details. However, by combining the best of both lithography and serigraphy the end result is an image far superior than any single process can achieve. This type of print is known as a serilith.
Q. What is an embossed and foil stamped serilith?
A. When it is the desire of an artist to incorporate metallic colors in their limited edition art they have only two choices. They can use the more common example of applying metallic ink during the printing process or they may choose the more elaborate process of having metallic foil applied to each print one at a time. Applying metallic foil is an expensive and time consuming process. When combined with embossing the end result is a striking and beautiful 3D image. To produce an embossed and foil stamped serilith such as the signed and numbered "All Hail New Orleans" four different processes are required. The first is lithography, then serigraphy, then foil stamping and finally embossing. The beauty of this type of print can not be properly appreciated except in person. Combining these various techniques requires the skills of both the artist and printmaker along with time, patience and great expense. The prints created by Michael Hunt featuring these techniques have won national acclaim and awards.
His latest, "All Hail New Orleans" is his finest to date.
Q. What is a Remarque and why is it so much more expensive?
A. Remarque- pronounced: ree-mark, is a drawing added by the artist to the art print. A remarque increases the value of a limited edition print substantially due to this unique feature. Although Michael Hunt's art is collected world-wide, only a very select few of his prints have an original "Remarque" making them highly collectible. Because a remarque is in fact an original work of art in itself, no two are identical
Q. What is an Artist Proof?
Artist Proofs are numbered prints which are not considered part of the edition. They are traditionally retained by the artist for his personal collection. These prints are signed "Artist Proof" or "AP". They are very desirable to collectors due to the limited number available and personal connection to the artist. An Artist Proof that features as Remarque is the most exclusive of all fine art prints.
Q. What is a Gicle?
A. Gicle'e ( pronounced Gee'clay ) is a French term that means a spray of liquid. The term is used in the art world to describe a reproduction process representing the highest evolution in printmaking technology. No screens or printing plates are used resulting in a fine art print that has all of the brilliant color and delicate shades of the original painting.
